Climbing .com reported that New Zealanders Paul Knott and Guy McKinnon climbed the northwest ridge of Mount Bertha and made the first recorded ascent of Peak 8599 in the Johns Hopkins Glacier drainage of the Fairweather Range on May 2. Their route was via the east rib to a couloir and snow-covered rock rib on the south face. The two climbers named the peak “Fifty Years of Alaskan Statehood.”
