How to Edit

Editing information is very easy. Currently anything can be edited. This will change as the wiki becomes more solid and pages such as the front page wont need to be edited anymore. Editing is simple there are just a few steps.

Easy enough! Don't think you have an account? Any member of Alaska Mountain Forum can edit the wiki.

  • Then look for the edit buttons on the top and bottom of the page. Each main section within the page can be edited on its own as well. So its not so much to look at while just wanting to edit a small part.

And thats it. See, told you it was simple.

How to Add a Peak

First off is adding information to the website. This information can be anything which pertains to the Alaskan outdoors. Here is how to add a peak to the wikisite.

  • First off do a search for the Peak you are trying to add. A list of similar names should show up. If you don't see the peak that you are trying to create you can click on the link which says:
There is no page titled "Special". You can create this page.

It will automatically bring you to a new page which should have a template pre-loaded into it. There is some information in the template which should not be removed and needs to be filled out for every peak. This information will automatically help database and add the peak to different sections of the board. Below is the information which should not be removed: (If you do not see this when trying to add a peak make sure to cut and paste the information below into the peak you are working on.)

{{Mountains
|State=
|Range=
|SubRange=
|Elevation=
|Prominence=
|Coordinate=
}}

Its pretty straitforward. After the equal sign add the information for each line. At the finish it should look something like this:

{{Mountains
|State=Alaska
|Range=Chugach
|SubRange=Chugach State Park
|Elevation= 4556
|Coordinate=37.22170°N / 112.9307°W
}}

Notice I did not put a ft or meters remark in the line for elevation.

The rest of the information in the template is yours currently to change, edit, or add to. Its up to you.

How to Add A Mountain Route

Test Box

Hookers Route
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: All Day
Total Distance: 12 Miles
Elevation Gain 3345ft
Rock Climbing 5.10
Ice Difficulty WI8
# of Pitches 3

Currently there are several ways of adding a route to the route section of a peak. One is called an Infobox. They are not very tricky to use you just have to know that you need to cut and paste the information in right now to use one. Its really simple. The information currently needed to cut and paste is:

{{Infobox
|name=
|image=
|caption=
|Difficulty=
|Time Required=
|Total Distance=
|Elevation Gain=
|Rock Climbing=
|Ice Difficulty=
|# of Pitches=
}}

As you can see you can have a picture show in the infobox with a caption. The above box would look like the one located on the right. You can have more then one Infobox per page. Using the Template:Infobox will add the box to the right and you can add your description and other information about the route into the text. For an example please visit Ptarmigan Peak

How to Add a Climbing Section

You can add climbing crags to different mountains or create a seperate section for each area such as Hatcher Pass Climbing Area. When you add different crags to the page it is nice to put a little extra information such as amount of routes and difficulty. I have created a nice little infobox for this called RockInfobox. All that is necessary is to cut and paste the information below into the route page and fill in the blanks.

{{RockInfobox
|name=
|image=
|caption=
|Crag Area=
|Difficulty Range=
|Approach Time=
|Total Distance=
|Route Length=
|# of Routes=
}}

How to Add a River

There is now the ability to add rivers, creeks, and streams to the wiki. There has been a template added which should come up if you name the watershed ending in either Creek, River, or Stream. Please fill in all the information in the template box you can. The box viewed as:

{{River
|Origin=
|Mouth=
|Basin=
|Length=
|Discharge=
|Watershed=
|Class=
}}

Should be in every waterway. The rest of the information please feel free to delete and edit to make it look as you would like it to. I have decided to make the state Regions the main way of organizing creeks or rivers. So there will be 5 main categories for the rivers. Please make sure use these categories only for your river. They are:

click for larger view.
click for larger view.
Far North
Interior
Inside Passage
South Central
South West

If you are not sure which you should use for your creek then check this map. It has them nicely labeled. Also use if the river runs through several of of the regions then categorize it from the Region that the river has its Origin. The other regions that it intersects can be put into the "Basin" section within the river.

How to Add A Trailhead

Trailheads can often be hard to find and hidden away in areas not so easy to get to. So it is great to make a page for a trailhead so that others can easily get to them. There is a basic template for trailheads which should be on every trailhead page:

{{Trailhead
|Nearest Highway=
|Nearest Road=
|Mile Marker=
|Km Marker=
|Open=
}}

Fill out the information the best that you can for each trailhead. "Open" is where you would put if it is only open for summer, winter, or all year.

Adding a Google Map

You can add a google map to any page. It is a really handy feature for Trailheads and other markers. Adding a google map is actually quite simple.

  • First step is to find the coordinates of what you are trying to add. The best way for me to do this is to go onto Google Maps and find the point you want to add. Right Click your mouse and say "Directions from Here". It will give you the coordinates to that point that you can cut and paste.
  • Second step is to cut and paste the google widget information.
<widget type="googlemap" debug="0" disabled="0">
<marker lat="61.397440" lon="-149.412620">
[Peters Creek Trailhead at the end of Malcolm Drive.]
</marker>
</widget>

The only information you should change should be the "lat=" the "lon=" and the Description which is in [ ] Tags. Everything else should remain the same. And you come up with a nice little google map!

Adding an Image

Theres currently one way to add an image. This will most likely change once I get to working on it. Right now you can click on the bottom of the page there is a link called : Upload File.

Once the file is uploaded there are two ways to add it into the wiki system. The easiest is the green arrow button the top of the edit box. It will open a file viewer where you can select the image you have uploaded or from others which have been uploaded. (There are a lot of errors at the top of this file viewer currently. They will be fixed soon.).

You can have just a thumbnail of your picture if you wish and you can add a short comment on the photo. Wiki uses some odd looking commands for its settings but once you use them a few times it should be really easy. Below is the first command for inserting an image.

[[Image:Bear_Couloir_Map.jpg]]

This will insert the whole image into your page. This is not always wanted however and it is usually better to have a thumbnail which can be easily achieved by adding some code.

[[Image:Bear_Couloir_Map.jpg|thumb|left|Lowell Creek Canyon to Northwest Ridge]]

Notice:
|thumb| = is added to specify a thumbnail and the comment goes after that.
|left| = The direction you want the picture on the page. You can also have right or center.
|Lowell Creek...]] = This is where a description of the photo would go.

Have more then one Image you would like to add to a page? Use the Gallery Tag. When using the gallery tag you do not need to use the [[ tags before and after the image.

<gallery>
Image:Bear_Couloir_Map.jpg|This is a map of Some Bear Thing
Image:Ptarmiganpeak.jpg|A Map of Ptarmigan Peak.
Image:HomicidePeak.jpg|Homicide Peak
</gallery>

This will produce a nice image gallery such as is on the Hearth Mountain Page.

More information about Images and their properties can be found here: [1]

GIS and Geo Coordinates

There is a new tag on the wiki which should help locate any peak or location. All you have to do is add the code anywhere in the page and it will automatically link to a pagewhich has lots of different links to topo maps and other types of map. The program is however very specific and must be in the exact format listed below. Note there are no commas between the coordinates or other characters.

<geo>48 46 36 N 121 48 51 W</geo>

You can also specify a few extra details within the tab. And would be in this format

<geo>48 46 36 N 121 48 51 W type:mountain region:US scale:100000</geo>

You can find more information on tags used for this extension at Mediawiki:GIS Extension[2]
